Obsidian backlinks are the reverse view of internal links: if one note links to another, the target note shows that incoming reference as a backlink. ## What backlinks are A backlink is any note that points to the note you are currently viewing. In practice, you make a normal internal link like [[Cell Biology]], and the note named [[Cell Biology]] will show the source note in its backlinks. Backlinks are useful because they expose the network around a note instead of only the links going outward from it. That lets you see where a concept, topic, or project is being referenced elsewhere in your vault. ## What Obsidian supports Obsidian’s custom markdown syntax supports basic wikilinks, aliases, heading links, and block links. - [[Note]] - [[Note|Display Text]] - [[Note#Heading]] - [[Note#^block-id]] Because backlinks are derived from those internal links, a note can accumulate references at the page, heading, or block level. That makes backlinks more precise than a simple list of related files.
