# Zen Basics ## What it is Zen (禅) is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that emphasizes direct experience over doctrine — insight gained through meditation and daily practice rather than scripture study or intellectual belief. It traveled from India to China (as Chan), then to Japan (as Zen), Korea (Seon), and Vietnam (Thiền). ## Core ideas **Zazen** — seated meditation, the central practice. Usually just sitting with upright posture and following the breath, observing thoughts without attachment to them. **Direct experience over concepts** — Zen distrusts words and doctrine as substitutes for reality itself. The finger pointing at the moon is not the moon. **Impermanence** — everything is in flux; suffering comes from clinging to things as fixed. **Non-duality** — the separation between self and world, subject and object, is a construct. Enlightenment (satori/kensho) is a direct glimpse past that construct. **Beginner's mind (shoshin)** — approaching each moment without preconceptions, even after years of practice. **Everyday mindfulness** — practice isn't confined to the cushion. Eating, walking, washing dishes are all opportunities for full attention. ## Two major schools (Japanese Zen) - **Soto** — "just sitting" (shikantaza), gradual and steady practice, enlightenment unfolds naturally. - **Rinzai** — uses koans (paradoxical questions like "what is the sound of one hand clapping") to shock the rational mind out of its habitual patterns, often pursuing sudden insight. ## Koans Not riddles with logical answers — tools to exhaust conceptual thinking so direct insight can occur. Classic collections: *The Gateless Gate*, *The Blue Cliff Record*. ## A simple daily practice 1. Sit upright, eyes half-open or closed, hands resting in your lap. 2. Breathe naturally; count breaths 1–10, repeat if you lose count. 3. When thoughts arise, notice them, let them pass, return to the breath. 4. Start with 5–10 minutes; consistency matters more than duration. ## Further reading - *Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind* — Shunryu Suzuki - *The Gateless Gate* — Mumon (trans. various) - *Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance* — Robert Pirsig (tangential but popular)
