## Nikon Z6
Nikon announced the Z6 on 23 August 2018 alongside the higher-resolution Z7, launching the Z mount system — Nikon's move into full-frame mirrorless after decades of F-mount DSLRs. It shipped that November at $1,999.95 body-only.
The original Z6 paired a 24.5-megapixel backside-illuminated full-frame sensor with the EXPEED 6 processor, a 273-point on-sensor phase-detect AF system, 12fps burst shooting, and a native ISO range of 100–51200. The Z mount itself was the bigger story: a 55mm throat diameter and short 16mm flange distance, wide enough to eventually support lenses as fast as f/0.95, with only three native lenses (24-70mm f/4 S, 35mm f/1.8 S, 50mm f/1.8 S) available at launch. It had a 3.69-million-dot OLED viewfinder and a 3.2" 2.1-million-dot touchscreen, plus weather sealing, but only a single XQD card slot — a widely criticized limitation at the time.
The line has since gone through two further generations. The Z6 II (2020) added a second card slot (UHS-II SD alongside CFexpress/XQD), dual EXPEED 6 processors, and 4K/60p video. The Z6 III (2024) was a bigger jump: a new partially-stacked sensor, pre-capture burst shooting up to 120fps, internal 6K raw video, a 5.76-million-dot EVF, and a fully vari-angle screen — closing much of the gap to Nikon's flagship Z8/Z9 bodies while staying at the "mid-range" price point the Z6 line was built for.
