## Background
Brevity is a journal dedicated specifically to flash nonfiction: essays and memoir fragments of 750 words or fewer. It was founded around the idea of combining the compression and immediacy of flash fiction with the truth-telling of memoir, giving concise personal narrative its own dedicated home rather than treating it as a subcategory of longer essay forms. Over roughly two decades of publishing, it has featured work from Pulitzer Prize winners, NEA fellows, Pushcart Prize winners, and Best American Essays contributors, alongside many first-time published writers, making it one of the more prestigious venues specifically for very short memoir and nonfiction.
Its companion site, the Brevity Blog (launched 2006), is a long-running, widely read forum for craft discussion specifically about creative nonfiction and flash nonfiction writing, and is a useful resource in its own right for memoir writers looking to study the form, independent of submitting to the magazine itself.
